What it actually costs to sell ALGO

Selling $100,000 of ALGO into each exchange’s resting bids, measured against the mid price:

ExchangeLostGot backMeasured
Kraken ALGO/USD 0.29% $99,707 2026-10-08
Coinbase ALGO/USD 0.40% $99,605 2026-10-08

Exchange figures need an account there (and KYC, a permitted country, the tokens already deposited), are before trading fees, and are never averaged with the on-chain figure. Binance is not included: it refuses requests from the region our servers are in. How this is measured →

Watch this number instead of remembering it. A free account keeps ALGO on a list, records where it stood the day you added it, and emails you if selling it on these exchanges gets materially harder — one message, not a series. The measurement itself stays public; the account is for being told when it moves without you looking.

What Algorand is

Algorand was launched in 2019 by Silvio Micali, an MIT professor and Turing Award winner whose earlier work is foundational to modern cryptography. Its consensus design is unusual in a specific way: a small committee is selected at random for each block, secretly, so that nobody knows in advance who will be chosen and there is no one to bribe or attack.

The practical result is that blocks are final immediately. There is no waiting for confirmations and no possibility of the chain reorganising, which matters a great deal for payments and for any application where a reversed transaction would be a real problem.

Its difficulties have been economic rather than technical. Early distribution, including a token sale structure and large foundation holdings released on a schedule, put sustained selling pressure on the price for years. Adoption has skewed heavily toward institutional pilots, central bank experiments and government partnerships — announcements that generate headlines but frequently do not translate into sustained on-chain activity. And the relay nodes that propagate blocks were a permissioned set for much of the network's life, which is a meaningful qualification to describe alongside the decentralisation claims.

Algo sits in an account controlled by a private key. Every account has to keep a minimum of 100,000 microAlgos, which is 0.1 Algo: a transaction that would take the balance below that fails. What a wallet actually is →

Earn a return by itself
Partly
Through A node you run, or a staking pool

Algo earns rewards only from an account that commits at least 30,000 Algo to running the network, which takes a computer running a node. The Algo stays in the holder's own wallet throughout. Holders with less can join a staking pool.

Run applications
Yes
Through Nobody

Algorand runs programs stored on its chain, written in Python or TypeScript and run by its own virtual machine. Each app is its own code with its own flaws.

Limit its own supply
Yes
Through Nobody

The supply of Algo is capped at 10 billion. Staking rewards are paid from transaction fees and, for about two years, from a fixed pool held by the Algorand Foundation.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
