CRO is the token of Crypto.com, one of the larger centralised exchanges, and the gas token of Cronos, its associated Ethereum-compatible blockchain. It began in 2018 as an exchange token and its main uses remain tied to the company: trading fee discounts, and the staking tiers that determine the rewards on the company's debit cards.
Cronos itself is a straightforward EVM chain, which means Ethereum tooling and applications work on it with little modification, and CRO pays the fees.
Like every exchange token, it is closer to a proxy for one company than to a neutral protocol asset — its value tracks that company's volumes, marketing spend and continued operation. The card rewards that drove much of the early demand were cut sharply in 2021, and holders discovered that the benefit underpinning the token was a policy rather than a property. More instructively, seventy billion CRO burned in 2021 — described at the time as permanent and irreversible — were restored by a governance vote in 2025. Whatever the merits of that decision, it demonstrates something worth generalising: a supply cap is only as fixed as the process capable of changing it.
Where CRO lives
Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by the data source, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.
