What changed
Week to 9 OctoberNothing we measure moved much this week: trading volume, reported supply and price are all within their usual range.
From our own measurements only, each against the month before. We do not say why a price moves. How this is worked out · Every coin this week
What it actually costs to sell FIL
Selling $100,000 of FIL into each exchange’s resting bids, measured against the mid price:
| Exchange | Lost | Got back | Measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase FIL/USD | 0.25% | $99,746 | 2026-10-09 |
| Kraken FIL/USD | 0.26% | $99,741 | 2026-10-09 |
Exchange figures need an account there (and KYC, a permitted country, the tokens already deposited), are before trading fees, and are never averaged with the on-chain figure. Binance is not included: it refuses requests from the region our servers are in. How this is measured →
Watch this number instead of remembering it. A free account keeps FIL on a list, records where it stood the day you added it, and emails you if selling it on these exchanges gets materially harder — one message, not a series. The measurement itself stays public; the account is for being told when it moves without you looking.
What Filecoin is
Filecoin is a decentralised storage network launched in 2020 by Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS. It creates a market for disk space: providers offer storage, clients pay to have files kept, and the network verifies that the data is still being held rather than taking anyone's word for it.
The verification is the interesting engineering. Providers must lock collateral and continuously produce cryptographic proofs that they still hold the exact data they agreed to store. Fail to produce them and the collateral is slashed. That turns a promise into something enforceable without a contract or a court.
The honest caveat is about what all that capacity is used for. A large share of the network's committed storage has historically held no real client data — providers can pledge capacity and earn rewards for proving they could store something, which inflates the headline numbers considerably against actual paying demand. Retrieval speed and cost are a separate problem from storage and have been slower to mature. And running a storage business here means locking up FIL, so provider economics are exposed to the token price as much as to the storage market.

Our own measurement · measured 9 October 2026
FIL pays nothing for being held. New FIL goes to storage providers, who earn it by offering storage space to the network.

No more than 2 billion FIL will ever exist. Most of it is created only as the network grows, and some is permanently removed through fees and penalties, so the docs say the maximum will never be reached.

About the asset
Filecoin has no token contract — it is the native asset of its own chain, not a token issued on someone else's.
