What Irys is
Irys is a Layer 1 datachain that combines onchain data storage and smart contract execution within a single network. It is designed to serve two needs separately handled elsewhere: the data-handling capacity of storage-focused chains and the execution capacity of smart contract platforms.
The network runs on IrysVM, an EVM-compatible execution layer that makes stored data programmable. Users choose between term storage, which is temporary and duration-based, or permanent storage, a one-time payment for perpetual retention; both are priced at cost. Irys funds this through a combined model of storage fees, execution fees, and programmable data transactions. Capacity scales as validators join and prove ongoing maintenance of the data partitions assigned to them. The native token, $IRYS, pays for storage and execution fees and is used for validator staking.
Irys is classified by CoinGecko under Smart Contract Platform, BNB Chain Ecosystem, Layer 1, Ethereum Ecosystem, and Binance Wallet IDO categories, and is deployed on the BNB Smart Chain and Ethereum networks — meaning it operates as a token on these chains rather than, or in addition to, standing fully independent of them; the source does not specify which. The source gives no founding entity, launch date, validator count, or fee figures, so none are stated here. Claims of "instant" retrieval and "infinite" scaling describe design intent in the source material, not measured performance, and no throughput, latency, or cost benchmarks are given. Where IRYS lives
On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.
