Ondo Finance builds tokenised versions of conventional financial assets — principally short-dated US government debt — so that a holding which normally requires a brokerage account can be moved on a blockchain instead. Its products hold real Treasuries and money market fund shares through regulated intermediaries, and issue tokens representing a claim on them.
The appeal is straightforward and does not require believing anything about crypto: a dollar sitting in a stablecoin earns its holder nothing while the issuer keeps the interest. A tokenised Treasury product passes that yield through, while remaining transferable on-chain around the clock.
Two distinctions matter and are routinely collapsed. The yield-bearing products are gated — eligibility rules, identity verification, and in several cases exclusion of US retail investors — so they are not simply open to anyone who holds the token. And ONDO itself is a governance token for the protocol, entirely separate from those products: holding it conveys a vote, not the Treasury yield. Underneath, the entire category depends on off-chain legal structures actually being enforceable in a court. That is a real protection, and it is also a very different kind of guarantee from anything the code provides.
