What is client diversity?

Client diversity means Ethereum's nodes and validators are spread across several independent software implementations instead of one. Because each client is written separately, a bug in one is less likely to halt or corrupt the whole network.

What it means for you

For a staker, the client run affects your own stake, not only the network: if a client with a two-thirds majority has a critical bug, its validators can be stuck on an invalid chain and slashed heavily, while those on other clients are not. Asking a staking service which clients it runs is a fair question.

How it works

Every node runs one execution client and one consensus client, so diversity matters on both layers. If a consensus client used by more than a third of nodes has a bug, the chain may be unable to finalize, so transactions could in principle still be reverted. If a client with a two-thirds majority has a critical bug, the chain could split and finalize the wrong branch, stranding many validators. Slashing scales with how many validators misbehave together, and a two-thirds majority would be slashed maximally, losing the full 32 ETH.
