What is DePIN?

DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure network) is a model in which people deploy real-world equipment, such as wireless hotspots, storage drives, computing hardware or sensors, and are paid in tokens for providing a service, with a blockchain recording contributions and rewards.

What it means for you

Joining a DePIN usually means buying hardware up front in exchange for token rewards whose value can fall, sometimes below the cost of the device and electricity. Check what the network pays for, who actually buys the service, and whether rewards come from that demand or mainly from new token issuance.

How it works

Researchers describe DePIN as using blockchain technology to decentralize the control and management of physical devices, with blockchain-based incentives that motivate individuals to contribute wireless connectivity, storage, computing power or sensing. One classification proposes three tests to tell a DePIN apart from related systems: a three-sided market, token-based incentives for supply, and a requirement that physical assets be placed in the world. A survey of the field lays out a five-layer architecture and catalogs open challenges facing these networks.
