What is a fake crypto exchange?

A fake exchange is a website or app that looks like a crypto trading platform but is run by scammers. It takes your deposit, shows invented balances or profits, and blocks withdrawals or demands more money, often called taxes or fees, before you can take anything out.

What it means for you

A balance on a screen is only a number the operator chose to display; what counts is whether you can withdraw. A demand to pay a fee or tax before your funds are released is a common sign of this fraud. In the US you can check whether a platform is registered with regulators, and type its address yourself rather than follow a link from someone you met online.

How it works

The CFTC describes fraudulent crypto trading sites that promise high returns, often 20 to 50 percent, described as guaranteed and nearly risk-free, then tell investors to pay more, such as supposed taxes, to withdraw fake profits; once crypto is sent it can be moved abroad quickly. The FBI reports these platforms are often introduced by a stranger met on a dating app or social media who coaches the victim and shows fake gains, which makes a fake exchange the usual tool of a pig-butchering scheme. bitcoin.org notes some fake exchanges lure buyers with prices well below the market.

An example

Say you deposit $1,000 on a trading site a new online friend suggested. Within a month the dashboard shows $5,000. When you ask to withdraw, support says you owe a 20% tax, $1,000, first. You pay it, and a new fee appears. The $5,000 never existed; it was a number on the site's own screen.
