What is a fake wallet app?

A fake wallet app is software that copies the name, logo and look of a real crypto wallet but is built to steal from you, usually by sending your seed phrase or keys to the attacker as soon as you create or import a wallet.

What it means for you

Anything typed into a fake wallet, including a seed phrase imported from another wallet, can be taken. You can get wallet software through the link on the wallet maker's own website, check the publisher name in the app store, and treat links from ads, direct messages or strangers as suspect. Hardware wallets bought second-hand or from third-party sellers carry a similar risk.

A common mistake: “If an app is in the official store, it is the real one.”

In fact: Official app stores have carried counterfeit apps that copy a popular app's name and icon. A store listing alone does not prove who published it; the publisher name and the maker's own website link are the checks.

How it works

Counterfeit apps imitate popular apps to get installed, then collect personal data or spread malware; a study of about 1.2 million apps in a major Android store found 139 containing malware among those visually close to the top 1,000. The FBI has warned of fraudulent crypto apps using the names and logos of real companies, and bitcoin.org notes trojanized applications distributed through package managers and counterfeit hardware wallets sold with a seed phrase the attacker already knows. Whoever learns your seed phrase controls your funds, so a fake wallet controls them from the moment you use it.
