What is a honeypot token?

A honeypot token is a scam token whose smart contract (the code that runs the token) lets people buy it but blocks or restricts selling or transferring it. The price chart can look healthy because buyers cannot get out, while the creator can.

What it means for you

Being able to buy a token proves nothing about being able to sell it. Before buying, check that the contract address matches the one the project itself publishes, and look for evidence that ordinary holders have sold. Money spent on a honeypot token is usually lost, and a wallet showing a balance does not mean that balance can be sold.

A common mistake: “Other people are buying and the chart is going up, so I will be able to sell too.”

In fact: In a honeypot the chart rises precisely because ordinary holders cannot sell. Buying works for everyone; selling works only for the owner. Evidence of ordinary holders selling, not of buying, is what matters.

How it works

A token's rules live in its contract code, and that code decides who may transfer or sell. Researchers who studied these scams, which they call trapdoor tokens, found contracts that let anyone buy but block selling through hidden logic bugs or functions only the owner can use. Because buyers cannot exit, the price chart keeps rising and looks attractive, while the owner can still sell. Token names and symbols can be copied freely, so the contract address published by the real project is the only reliable identifier. A test that tries both a buy and a sell is one way detection tools find them.
