What is social recovery?
Social recovery is a way to regain a crypto wallet without a seed phrase: you name several guardians, such as friends, family or your own other devices, and a majority of them can approve replacing the wallet's key if you lose it. Day to day, you sign with one key as normal.
What it means for you
Your protection depends on your guardians: if too many lose access, collude or are tricked, you cannot recover, or someone else can take over. It works only with a smart contract wallet set up in advance; an ordinary key-based account cannot be recovered once its key is lost.
How it works
Vitalik Buterin's design uses a smart contract wallet with one signing key for everyday transactions and at least three guardians, a majority of whom can sign a special transaction that swaps the signing key for a new one. The signing key can add or remove guardians, but only after a delay, often one to three days, so a thief who steals it cannot quickly replace them. Unlike a multisig, which needs several signatures for every payment, guardians act only to replace the key. To steal through recovery, several guardians would have to find each other and agree without any of them warning the owner.
