Why a crypto payment cannot be undone

Card payments can be reversed by someone other than you. Crypto payments cannot. That single difference explains most of the rules, and most of the losses.

If someone takes four hundred pounds off your debit card fraudulently, you call your bank. A person there can reverse the transaction, because the payment network is a set of records maintained by institutions who are allowed to amend them. The money is an entry in a ledger somebody controls, and control includes the power to put it back.

Crypto has no equivalent of that person, and the absence is structural rather than an oversight. A confirmed transaction is not a request that a company chose to honour; it is a fact recorded across thousands of independent machines, none of whom know you or answer to anyone who does. Undoing it would mean persuading the majority of that network to agree to rewrite history for one person. The property that makes the system resistant to censorship and seizure is the same property that makes your mistake permanent. You cannot have one without the other, and anyone selling you a version with both is selling something else.

So the entire cost of an error moves to before you press send. In a card payment, most of the safety sits after the transaction, in dispute rights you probably never think about. In a crypto payment, all of it sits before. This is the single most important adjustment for someone arriving from ordinary banking, and almost nobody makes it deliberately — they make it after the first expensive lesson.

A wrong address is not a recoverable error. Send to an address with a typo and, depending on the network, the transaction either fails harmlessly or succeeds perfectly into an address nobody holds the key to. There is no returns process. Address formats carry checksums that catch most random corruption, which is genuinely useful, and which is also why people stop checking — the protection works until the address you pasted is a valid one belonging to somebody else. Copy from the source every time and verify the first and last several characters against what you intended. Clipboard-hijacking malware exists precisely because that habit is rare.

Send a small amount first, always, on anything that would hurt to lose. A test transaction costs a network fee and a few minutes. It confirms the address, the network, the memo or tag if one is required, and that the receiving end actually credits it. Skipping this step is how people discover that an exchange required a destination tag, or that they sent to the right address on the wrong network, at the exact moment when discovering it is useless.

The same finality is why "send us some and we will send more back" works as a scam. It is not a clever trick. It is a straightforward exploitation of the fact that the first payment cannot be reversed and the second was never going to be made. Every variant — a giveaway, a recovery fee, an unlock payment, a tax you must pay before withdrawal — depends entirely on that asymmetry. Finality is a feature you are paying for. No institution can freeze your account because a system flagged it, reverse a payment you legitimately made, or decide you are in the wrong jurisdiction this year. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on what you need. It is worth being clear that you have made it, though, because the trade is not optional and it does not come with a support line. What it comes with instead is the requirement to be slow and deliberate at exactly one moment, which is the moment before you confirm.
