Gwei
Gwei is a small unit of ether used to quote gas prices. One gwei is one-billionth of an ETH (10^-9 ETH). Wallets show fees in gwei so the numbers are readable instead of long decimals.
What it means for you. A gas price in gwei is a price per unit of gas, not the total fee. The total is the gas used multiplied by the price, so check the fee your wallet shows in ETH or dollars before you sign, not just the gwei figure.

Wei
Wei is the smallest unit of ether: one ETH equals 10^18 wei, a 1 followed by 18 zeros. Gwei, equal to 10^9 wei, is the unit usually used for gas prices.
What it means for you. Transactions and contracts record amounts in wei, so raw data on a block explorer or in a signing request can show a huge integer for a small amount. Miscounting the 18 decimal places misreads an amount by factors of a thousand or more; the converted ETH figure is the one to check before confirming.
