▼3.10%What Avalanche is
Avalanche is a proof-of-stake platform launched in 2020 by Ava Labs, founded by Cornell computer scientist Emin Gün Sirer. Its consensus achieves finality in a second or two — once a transaction confirms it is settled, with no waiting for further blocks.
Its structural idea is subnets: rather than every application competing for space on one chain, projects can launch their own networks with their own rules and validators, while still connecting to the wider ecosystem. Its C-Chain runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, so existing tools work with minimal changes.
Adoption has been uneven. Subnets are genuinely useful for institutions and games that need dedicated capacity, but the flagship examples have been fewer than the architecture promised, and much activity still concentrates on the main C-Chain rather than spreading across subnets. AVAX competes directly with several fast, cheap, EVM-compatible chains, and technical quality alone has not proved decisive in that contest.
About the asset
Avalanche has no token contract — it is the native asset of its own chain, not a token issued on someone else's.
