What BNB is

BNB was launched by the crypto exchange Binance in 2017, initially as a token giving traders a discount on trading fees. It has since become the native asset of BNB Chain, Binance's own blockchain, where it pays transaction fees in the same way ETH does on Ethereum.

Supply falls over time. Binance periodically destroys BNB through a burn mechanism tied to network activity, with a stated goal of reducing the total supply substantially from its original issuance.

What makes BNB unusual is how tightly it is bound to a single company. Its value reflects Binance's trading volume, its ecosystem and its continued operation, which makes it closer to a corporate proxy than a neutral protocol asset. That exposure runs both ways: Binance's 2023 settlement with US authorities, which included a guilty plea and the departure of its founder as CEO, is the kind of event that affects BNB in a way it would not affect a chain with no company behind it.
