Chainlink is an oracle network launched in 2017 that solves a problem blockchains cannot solve alone: smart contracts can only see data already on their own chain, yet most useful contracts need outside information — asset prices, interest rates, event outcomes.
Independent node operators fetch data from multiple sources and submit it on-chain, with results aggregated so no single operator can dictate the answer. Its price feeds became critical infrastructure for lending and derivatives protocols, where a wrong number means immediate, irreversible losses. Chainlink has since expanded into cross-chain messaging.
The honest caveats are two. The set of node operators is smaller and more permissioned than the marketing implies, so trust is reduced rather than eliminated. And the relationship between the network's usefulness and the LINK token's value has been persistently debated — a great deal of the data Chainlink serves is subsidised rather than paid for in LINK at market rates, which makes token demand harder to reason about than protocol demand.
