▼6.30%What Cosmos Hub is
The Cosmos Hub launched in 2019 as the first chain in a wider project, and ATOM is its native token. The idea behind it has been unusually influential: rather than everything running on one blockchain, developers should be able to build their own sovereign chain and connect it to the others through a shared messaging standard.
The tooling that came out of this — a development kit, a consensus engine with fast finality, and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol — is used well beyond Cosmos itself. Chains built with it run their own validators and set their own rules while remaining able to move assets between each other.
The uncomfortable part is that this success did not accrue to ATOM. Sovereignty was the point, so chains built with the toolkit owe the Hub nothing: they do not pay it fees, do not need its security, and do not need its token. The ecosystem grew substantially while the asset at its centre captured very little of that growth — a case study in the difference between a widely adopted technology and a valuable token. Direction has also been contested, with several public governance fights over issuance and the Hub's purpose.
Where ATOM lives
Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by the data source, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.
