What CoW Protocol is
CoW Protocol issues a token, COW, that gives holders governance rights over the CoW Protocol ecosystem through an organization called CowDAO. Holders can vote to govern and curate the protocol's infrastructure. The token also carries practical perks for active users: COW holders receive fee discounts when trading on CowSwap, along with some other unspecified benefits.
The mechanism described is straightforward: holding COW confers voting weight within CowDAO, the body that directs the protocol, and separately unlocks discounted trading fees on CowSwap. The source does not detail how votes are weighted, how proposals are submitted, or how the fee discount scales with holdings — only that the linkage exists between token ownership, governance participation, and reduced trading costs.
COW is a governance and utility token, not a claim on protocol revenue, equity, or assets — nothing in the source describes dividends, buybacks, or cash-flow rights attached to holding it. The fee-discount perk is a trading incentive, not a yield. The token is deployed across six chains — Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Polygon, and Gnosis Chain — which means its governance and discount mechanics may function differently, or require bridging, depending on which chain a holder actually uses. CoinGecko's classification tags it under DEX, DeFi, and MEV-protection categories, reflecting the ecosystem it governs rather than any property of the token's economics. No supply schedule, distribution mechanism, or voting-weight formula is given here, so claims about scarcity, inflation, or how much influence a given holding actually carries cannot be verified from this material.
Where COW lives
On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.
Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.
