What Energy Web Token is

Energy Web Token (EWT) is the native utility token of the Energy Web decentralised technology platform, built around solutions for energy and sustainability markets. It was first launched in June 2019 on Energy Web Chain (EWC), a proof-of-authority network that now operates only for archival and backward-compatibility purposes. The token was added to the European Securities and Markets Authority's register in November 2025 for MiCA compliance.

The platform's active infrastructure consists of two layers: Energy Web X, a public, permissionless nominated proof-of-stake blockchain, and the Verified Compute Cloud, which handles off-chain business logic. EWT itself circulates as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, which functions as the primary settlement and custody environment. A validator-governed, bidirectional bridge connects Ethereum to the Energy Web X network, moving EWT between the two while preserving total supply and utility.

EWT is deployed on Ethereum and Hydration. It is tracked under several thematic classifications, including energy, real-world assets, and regenerative finance, alongside ecosystem tags for Polkadot, Gnosis Chain and Hydration — groupings that reflect indexing categories rather than endorsed use cases. The source material does not specify a maximum supply, token distribution, or validator count, so none of those figures can be stated here. The original Energy Web Chain network still exists but is explicitly archival, meaning current activity concentrates on the newer Energy Web X and Ethereum layers; anyone assessing the token should treat the two chains as having different operational relevance rather than equal footing.

On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.

Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
