What Huobi is

Huobi Token (HT) is the exchange token of Huobi, described in its own launch materials as the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world. Huobi announced the token on January 22, 2018, and distributed it to users over the following two weeks. The token's founder, Leon Li, framed the launch as part of an effort to rebuild Huobi's user base after Chinese regulatory restrictions had sharply cut trading volume on the exchange in late 2017.

HT works as a loyalty and fee-discount mechanism rather than a standalone product. Of the total supply, 300 million tokens (60%) were sold to "Huobi Pro" members as part of discounted service packages, released in daily batches over 15 days that each sold out quickly. The remaining 200 million tokens (40%) were split evenly: 20% reserved for user rewards and platform operations, and 20% vested over four years as a team allocation. Holding HT reduces trading fees on the exchange and gives the token tradable value against other currencies, following a model Huobi explicitly credits to Binance Coin.

HT is not a governance token, a store of value, or a claim on Huobi's revenue — the source describes no mechanism for either. Its value and utility are tied to continued use of a single centralized exchange and its fee structure; Huobi itself called the distribution "not an ICO," but it conferred no ownership or voting rights. The token's history also includes a near-total collapse in Huobi's trading volume shortly before launch, a reminder that exchange tokens carry the operating risk of the exchange issuing them. It first appears in records from January 31, 2018, and is now tracked across multiple blockchain deployments, including Ethereum, Near, Harmony, and Elastos — a multi-chain presence that reflects token migrations and wrapped versions rather than a change in what the token fundamentally does.

On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.

Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
