What Metaplex is

Metaplex is a tokenization platform built on Solana, used for launching and trading onchain assets. It provides first-party applications for issuance and trading, alongside a developer platform supporting creation of asset types ranging from memecoins and project tokens to tokenized collectibles and real-world assets. The protocol positions itself as having powered a large share of asset creation activity on Solana.

Metaplex works by connecting issuers and traders through tooling that standardizes how assets are created and listed, aiming to link the moment a token or collectible is issued to the moment it can be traded in an onchain market. MPLX is the network's native token. Per the protocol's own terms, 50% of protocol revenue is allocated to MPLX buybacks, directed to the Metaplex DAO rather than distributed to individual token holders.

MPLX is not a claim on company equity or direct cash flow; the buyback mechanism routes revenue to a DAO treasury, and what the DAO does with repurchased tokens is a governance decision, not a guaranteed yield to holders. The token is classified by data providers under a wide spread of tags — gaming, NFT, launchpad, and both Solana and BNB Chain ecosystems — which reflects the breadth of assets the platform supports rather than a single defined use case. It is deployed on two chains, Solana and BNB Chain, which means its activity and liquidity are not confined to one network's conditions, but also means it inherits the operational dependencies of both. No figures on revenue size, buyback volume, or market position are established here; those move independently of what the protocol is designed to do.

On-chain, read 21 October Mint authority: set, held by BHkk…254k · Freeze authority: none · Solscan

On Solana, a mint authority can create more of the token and a freeze authority can freeze it in a holder's account; both are read from the token itself, every day. On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.

Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
