What Ocean Protocol is

Ocean Protocol is an ecosystem for sharing data and associated services. It provides a tokenized service layer exposing data, storage, compute and algorithms for consumption, backed by deterministic proofs of availability and integrity that function as verifiable service agreements. Staking on services signals quality and reputation and is intended to guard against Sybil attacks.

Within the ecosystem, data and algorithms are represented as assets, while integration, processing and persistence are represented as services. Ocean Protocol facilitates discovery by storing and promoting metadata and linking assets to services, and it provides a licensing framework with tools for pricing. Multiple data marketplaces can connect to the protocol to provide the "last mile" between data providers and consumers; the design intent is that a data owner is not locked into any single marketplace and retains control over each dataset.

Ocean Protocol is infrastructure for data exchange, not a data marketplace itself, a compute provider, or an AI model — it supplies the tokenized layer that such services can plug into. The source describes proof mechanisms and staking for quality signaling, but offers no detail here on how disputes are resolved or how staked value is slashed in practice. It is classified by CoinGecko across several categories — artificial intelligence, storage, DePIN among them — which reflects tagging rather than a single defined use case. OCEAN is deployed across several chains, including Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Energi and Sora; a multi-chain footprint spreads activity but also multiplies the bridges and contracts a holder is exposed to. Nothing in the source speaks to governance rights, revenue share, or token utility beyond staking — those claims, if made elsewhere, are not part of this record.

On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.

Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
