What Peercoin is
Peercoin launched in 2012, making it one of the earliest cryptocurrencies still in operation. It is credited with introducing proof-of-stake consensus, the first version of that mechanism used in a public blockchain. Its codebase draws heavily on Bitcoin's, and it is released under the MIT/X11 license.
Peercoin combines proof-of-work and proof-of-stake: it uses the same SHA-256 hash function as Bitcoin but is described as far more energy-efficient. Rather than a fixed maximum supply, it is designed to settle toward roughly 1% annual inflation over time, with the network's 0.01 PPC/kb transaction fee destroyed rather than paid to miners, a deflationary counterweight to that inflation. The project's stated philosophy is to keep the base chain minimal and push features such as tokens, smart contracts and faster transaction processing onto second-layer protocols built on top of it, on the view that adding functionality directly into the base protocol erodes decentralization over time.
Peercoin's own history undercuts some of its early claims: it does not offer transaction anonymity, and by its own account other chains such as Dogecoin matched or beat it on speed and cost, while proof-of-stake stopped being a distinguishing feature once competitors adopted it too. Because its stated design pushes smart contracts and tokens to second layers rather than the base chain, calling it a "smart contract platform" describes an intended layer built around it, not a native capability of the protocol measured here. It is tracked as deployed on Ethereum and Polygon networks, which indicates wrapped or bridged representations rather than its native chain. It is classified under both proof-of-stake and proof-of-work, reflecting its hybrid consensus design rather than a single settled category. No founder, company or governing entity is specified in available material, and no circulating-supply ceiling exists to point to, only an inflation target the protocol is designed to approach.
Where PPC lives
On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.
Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.
