Pepe launched in April 2023 as an Ethereum token built around a long-running internet meme, created by an anonymous team. It was unusual for being explicit about what it was: no roadmap, no promised utility, no claim to be building anything. Its own materials stated that it had no intrinsic value and was intended purely for entertainment.
Mechanically it was set up in the way an audience had learned to look for by then — no transfer taxes, liquidity pool tokens burned so the market could not simply be withdrawn, and contract ownership renounced so the rules could not be changed afterwards. Those checks are the reason it was taken more seriously than most tokens of its kind.
What it is not is an investment with a thesis. There is nothing generating value, nothing to analyse and no floor of any kind — the price is a pure function of attention. Holdings were heavily concentrated early on, so a small number of wallets could move it substantially. In August 2023 tokens were moved out of the project's shared wallet amid a public dispute between team members, a reminder that "the team cannot change the contract" is not the same as "the team cannot sell". Falls of seventy percent or more have been routine.
Where PEPE lives
Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by the data source, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.
