What POL (ex-MATIC) is

POL is the native token of Polygon, a set of Ethereum scaling networks built by a team originally founded in India in 2017 as Matic Network. It replaced the earlier MATIC token in a migration completed in 2024, at a one-to-one rate.

The best-known network, Polygon PoS, processes transactions on its own validator set and periodically commits checkpoints to Ethereum. Fees are a tiny fraction of Ethereum's, which is why it became a default home for consumer applications, games and large-brand experiments that could not have afforded to run on Ethereum directly.

The distinction the marketing tends to blur is worth stating plainly. A sidechain with its own validators is not a rollup: its security comes from those validators, not from Ethereum, and a failure among them is not something Ethereum would prevent. Polygon has since built zero-knowledge systems with stronger guarantees, but the chain most people actually use has historically been the former. The roadmap and the branding have both been revised repeatedly, and the token migration itself left a long tail of holders confused about which asset they owned.

The exit-friction index

We are measuring what share of the top 500 could not absorb a $100,000 sell. Leave an address and we will write once, when the first index is published. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
