What XRP is

XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a payment network that launched in 2012 and is closely associated with the company Ripple. It was built for one purpose: moving value between currencies quickly and cheaply, with transactions settling in seconds for a fraction of a cent.

The ledger does not use mining. A set of validators run by universities, exchanges and businesses agree on transaction order through a consensus protocol, which is why it is fast and uses very little energy.

Two things are worth understanding plainly. The entire supply was created at launch rather than mined, and Ripple holds a large portion in escrow, releasing it on a schedule — so supply dynamics depend heavily on one company's decisions. And in 2020 the SEC sued Ripple, alleging XRP was sold as an unregistered security; a 2023 ruling found that programmatic sales on exchanges were not securities transactions while institutional sales were, a split outcome that shaped how the whole industry now talks about token distribution.

About the asset

XRP has no token contract — it is the native asset of its own chain, not a token issued on someone else's.

The exit-friction index

We are measuring what share of the top 500 could not absorb a $100,000 sell. Leave an address and we will write once, when the first index is published. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
