What Tether is

Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of one US dollar. Launched in 2014, it is issued by Tether Limited, and it is consistently the most heavily traded asset in crypto — for many traders it functions as the dollar of the crypto market, particularly outside the United States.

The peg is maintained by backing, not by algorithms. Tether says each token is covered by reserves that today are largely short-dated US Treasury bills, and it publishes regular attestations of those holdings.

The distinction that matters: attestations are not full audits, and Tether's reserve composition has drawn sustained scrutiny — including a 2021 settlement with the New York Attorney General over past disclosures. Holding USDT means trusting a private company to hold real assets and honour redemptions, which is a different kind of risk from holding a decentralised asset. Tether can also freeze tokens, and has done so at the request of law enforcement.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and we will send the next one. One email, nothing else, and never to anyone else.
