What changed

Week to 3 October

Nothing we measure moved much this week: the cost of selling on Ethereum, trading volume, reported supply and price are all within their usual range.

From our own measurements only, each against the month before. We do not say why a price moves. How this is worked out · Every coin this week

What it actually costs to sell YFI

Selling $100,000 of YFI returned 10.7% less than the quoted price — Costly. Measured 2026-10-03 on Ethereum.

What yearn.finance is

Yearn Finance is a suite of decentralized finance products on the Ethereum blockchain offering lending aggregation, yield generation, and insurance. The protocol is maintained by independent developers and governed by holders of its YFI token.

It began as a passion project by Andre Cronje, built to automate the movement of capital between lending platforms as floating interest rates shifted, originally routing funds among dYdX, Aave, and Compound. Users depositing stablecoins such as DAI, USDT, USDC, or TUSD received yield-bearing tokens in return — yDAI for DAI, for instance. A later collaboration with Curve Finance combined four of these into a pooled yUSD token. The protocol subsequently introduced Vaults, which claim yield farming rewards, convert them back into underlying assets, socialize gas costs across depositors, and rebalance capital automatically — removing the need for users to understand the mechanics of the strategies involved.

Yearn Finance is not a fixed-yield product: returns depend on market conditions across the lending platforms and strategies it deploys into, and can change or disappear as those conditions shift. It is not a single-chain application — it is classified across DeFi, yield farming, and yield aggregator categories, and deployed on networks including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Fantom, Optimism, Polygon, Near, and others, meaning behavior, fees, and risk vary by deployment. YFI confers governance rights, not a claim on a fixed return or guaranteed protocol revenue. As with any yield strategy built atop third-party lending protocols, it inherits the smart-contract and counterparty risk of whatever it is currently allocating into, rather than eliminating it.

On Ethereum, Base and BNB Chain, GoPlus's analysis of each contract is read weekly: whether it has a function to block addresses or pause transfers, and whether an owner holds it. That is GoPlus's reading, not ours. Where a token exists on several chains, one copy's settings say nothing about the original coin.

Always verify a contract address against the project's own site before sending anything. Addresses are shown as published by CoinGecko, not as an endorsement — and identical-looking tokens on other chains are the most common way people lose money here.

The exit-friction index

Once a month we publish what a $100,000 exit really costs across every token we can measure. Leave an address and this month’s figure arrives straight away, and we will write again when the next index publishes. Nothing else, and never to anyone else.
