What TRON is

TRON is a blockchain launched in 2017 by Justin Sun, designed for high transaction throughput and very low fees. Its practical significance is narrower and larger than its marketing suggests: TRON carries an enormous share of global USDT transfers, particularly for users in emerging markets sending dollars across borders.

The network uses delegated proof of stake, where token holders vote for a small set of block producers. That design is what makes it cheap and fast.

It also makes it markedly more centralised than most major chains — a limited number of producers, with significant influence concentrated around its founder. Sun has attracted sustained regulatory attention, including 2023 SEC charges alleging fraud and market manipulation, which he has contested. TRON is best understood as effective infrastructure for moving stablecoins cheaply, chosen for utility rather than for decentralisation, and that trade-off should be made knowingly.

About the asset

TRON has no token contract — it is the native asset of its own chain, not a token issued on someone else's.
